I haven't written in this for a while. I have started to a ton of times but haven't had too much to say. Christmas was great. Since we were in Paris last year it was nice to just be home and have a tree (even thought it fell down and broke several ornaments). I got a digital camera so I hope to start posting photos again. It was so great to see everyone when Mike was here on the East coast. I hadn't seen anyone is ages so that makes up for a low-key New Years. New Years is too much pressure. Why can't I just eat cheese and drink wine on my couch and go to bed at 12:01. I like parties, don't get me wrong, but I seem to have a phobia about partying on New Years. The kitten remains crazy. Shuler has lost a lot of weight - he was so fat. He seems happier now. He loves Ponce. He cleans him everyday. Yesterday it took him a really long time to clean Ponce's behind. That was a bit gross/odd? Ponce needs to learn to take care of himself. Wedding plans are a pain. Really not into this. I did buy my dress with Saidy earlier this month. I'm headed up to WNY in February to finalize the church and set the time at the reception hall. We'll also meet with the pastor and the photographer. I'm hoping to check out florists and limos. The church thing is a nightmare. My mom did all this research on different churches, but it turns out the two we liked are ADA compliant - and we need full wheelchair accessibility so we may end up having an outdoor wedding. I really really hope we can avoid an outdoor wedding. We also can't decide on the time of the ceremony. I wanted a wedding in the fall because it is so beautiful. However, with a 5 p.m. wedding it will be dark out afterwards so we won't be able to do photos. I really don't want to take photos of us outside before we are really married. So, I'm wondering if we should move the wedding up to 3 p.m. I think we were going for an evening wedding on the advice from my mom - candle light ceremony with the setting sun coming through stained glass windows. I really can't decide. Going back to the church thing - We want a small church. There were a few small churches, but the rest are huge - read seating for 400 and I'm only inviting 75 people. So, the big churches are handicap accessible, but I really don't want to walk past empty pew after empty pew. My mom doesn't seem to get this. "So and so had her wedding there..." Well, so and so had 200 people there, I won't. I don't care that the photos won't reflect how empty the church will look. I care that I will see the empty church. I'm stumped as to what type of DJ I should get for the reception, and what I should do for ceremony music. I really don't want a soloist - but my mom is really pushing it - I think I'll win this fight. I really don't like the sound of organ music, but maybe if we do find a church their organ will be nicer than the one from my old church. I've been thinking of a harpist or cellist for the ceremony and maybe have them play cocktail hour at the reception as well. Then have the DJ start...if only I had all the money in the world. The DJ thing - my uncle knows somebody that I was suppose to call ages ago. I should call him. I have no idea what type of music I should request so that people can dance. I know what I don't want - the Thong Song. The last wedding I went to, I think this played more than once. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. We want our first dance to be to Luna by SP - but I really don't know how we'd dance to it. We can't dance so maybe it will work itself out, although we are planning on taking lessons. So grad school starts up again next week. Then in May I will be done with school forever - and I really mean it this time. So entirely sick of school. I have to drive out to Fairfax every Tuesday. Really not looking forward to this. I figure if the only hourly parking garage is full when I get to school I can justify skipping class. Last time I had class out there I bought a parking pass, which was a waste of money, and I'd have to park clear across campus and walk to my car after class around 10:30 p.m. This time, I'm skipping the pass and will pay in the visitor parking garage since it is much closer - and it should be cheaper too. I've been working out a lot lately and eating better. Sadly my Pilates class was cancelled Saturday so I'll have to remember to make it up next week. Pilates = fun I went out for our traditional restaurant week dinner last Friday and it was so good we decided to try another place for lunch on Saturday. We went to Las Tasca. Their special was all you can eat Tapas including dessert. They also have this wonderful special on Wednesday nights (although it is more expensive at $30/person) but if anyone wants to eat lots of tiny plates of food let me know. | | Friday, December 23rd, 2005 | | 9:03 am |

Dear Santa...
Dear Santa,
This year I've been busy!
In March I had a shoot-out with rival gang lords on the 5 near LA (-76 points). In April I pushed merrickindc in the mud (-17 points). Last Tuesday I saved a busload of nuns in Angola (326 points). In August zombiesquirrels and I robbed a bank (-50 points). Last Friday I broke riggie's X-Box (-12 points).
Overall, I've been nice (171 points). For Christmas I deserve a pony!

So long and thanks for all the cheese
May turned out to be a very good month. We got engaged at the beginning of the month and by the end of the month I got a bonus and he has a job interview. I'm crossing my fingers for June. In other news, there really isn't any. I haven't totally unpacked yet. There aren't any boxes lying around, instead there are piles of stuff. I really need to put it away because before you know it, I'll be moving again. Today was beautiful outside. We walked (and jogged I might add) the Custis trail for about four miles or so. It reminded me how much I use to love my bike. I really wish I had one here. Also, we got a kitten. His name was Mag Pie Mae, but then we picked him up and found out that the female kitten we were told about is in fact a male. So, we named him Ponce De Leon. Then we started calling him Damien because he is a bit evil. Shuler has settled down, but he's still a little mad about the whole ordeal. Once the kitten is fixed he may calm down some, and thus stop attacking Shuler every 45 seconds. Our apartment building is a trip. We don't have elevators, air conditioning or a pool. No big deal I guess, except that we are suppose to have it. Well. I think I'll put one of these piles away. | | Sunday, May 1st, 2005 | | 11:40 am |

Redrum, redrum, redrum...
What a nightmare. Seriously. After two weeks of dealing with the most incompetent people I have ever met, they outdid themselves yesterday. We called to make sure they had everything. They said they were missing just one document. I tried to fax it all day, and it finally went through and I had a confirmation that it did. So, we get to the apartment and we are told that they are missing two things…swearing ensues…we end up going back to our current apartment, getting the form that leasing center filled out and hand delivering it, along with hand delivering the form I had faxed over earlier. (I should get a commission for leasing myself the apartment.) We get back with all the forms and the manager starts telling me how all our trouble is worth it. I wouldn’t even look at her. She just kept talking and I couldn’t acknowledge her because I thought I might punch something. The funny part was when another person working there took a call and was saying, “It usually takes 3-5 days… oh, it has been, well sometimes it can take longer. Um hmm, I’m sure he has everything.” Ha, and we thought we were the only couple getting the four-start service!!!! But, it is all worked out now (I hope). We signed a lease, we have keys. This is the first time I have seen the apartment and my impressions are: 1. Hey, this is just like the Overlook Hotel. We’ll have to invite people over to watch the Shining. I bet they filmed the hallway scenes here. 2. Well, we’ll only be living here a year. 3. That smells funny, but I don’t think it is a dead animal. 4. (Oh, by the way, after we signed the lease they told us there was lead in the paint on the ceiling. Thanks for the heads up.) Well, the ceiling isn’t chipping, but everything else is, so that should be ok. 5. That huge crack in the wall - not too bad since it isn’t in the ceiling. (When filling out the walk-through form before moving in, I ran out of room to write.) More encouraging observations: 6. This apartment is very big. 7. We don’t have to get rid of any furniture 8. We will only be living here one year. (I think I said that already) 9. Other residents seem really nice. 10. This apartment is very big, oh I said that already. On another note, I think I have a cavity. Forthcoming – an invitation to visit the Overlook Hotel. I’ll provide fun, music, drinks, insanity, and maybe some Red Rum! Maybe Tony will be there. The story of Incompetence
Well, things were looking up at 9 a.m. today. We were suppose to sign a lease tomorrow at 4 p.m. However, things have gone downhill fast since this morning. I got a call that the Incompetence was not able to verify my employment or my current lease. Well, how many times did Incompetence try: twice, over the last 14 days. Why didn't Incompetence tell me what the status of the application when we called six times in the last 14 days: because Incompetence NEVER ONCE returned our calls. Why did we not think it was an issue: because other incompetence in the office assured us that everything was fine, if it wasn't he would call. Why don't we run screaming for this place: I have no idea. How many more days do we have an apartment: 17! How does Incompetence still have a job: who knows? Why is this so ironic: I gave notice because I know both of us have excellent credit, we both just got promotions and would have good recommendations from each of our former leasing centers. Therefore, what could go wrong with our application, right? Incompetence! That's what. Sadly, we have both been very blunt with him, as well as with everyone we have spoken to there, so at this point I'm a little nervous that they won't work to help us, but will instead tell us, "Your application hasn't been approved yet, and since it is no longer within the two week period you will not be able to get the move in special." The "special" is the only thing that allowed us to afford the place. Our leasing center is closed today so we can't really do any follow up. I will call our leasing (current) leasing center tomorrow and see if I can renege on our 30 days notice. Maybe they can just rip up the letter we gave them and we can live happily for six more months. It is probably worth it to find out. I guess the only thing that could get in the way of that is if they have already scheduled the contractors to renovate our place. I thought I was making this difficult, but I think it simply is difficult. | | Monday, April 18th, 2005 | | 10:07 am |
May, why can't you come any faster.
Turns out, we might not have a home after all. Long story that I can't bear to write about, but I think I'm getting an ulcer because I'm constantly worrying about it. I gave 30 days notice when we signed the application, not the lease. Because, why would we be turned down? We haven't been turned down, and I'm sure we won't be, but for some reason it is taking the idiot at the apartment almost 14 days to review the application - we were told it would take 3 to 5 days and that we would be moved in already. We've moved around enough to know that it usually only takes 3 to 5. This means we haven't moved - we had planned to start last weekend. We haven't rented a truck nor reserved the freight elevator. It is just so frustrating for me, because I'm an anal planner and there are so many things we need to do - but we need a DATE before we can do them. It is just frustrating. I'm mad because I thought I was being smart by giving notice so we wouldn't have to pay a lot of over lap in rent...now we will be hustling to get out in time. I'm sure this will all work out and maybe for the better because we will have even less overlap in rent. School is fine. Almost over until next Fall. If all goes well I'll be done this time next year. I saw Saidy this weekend and hopefully she doesn't hate me because of all the wine we drank. Really, a LOT of wine. We also walked to Georgetown Saturday. It was beautiful out. She also showed me photos of Merrikindc's wedding. BEAUTIFUL - seriously, glowing with happiness! I really wish I could have been there. I can't wait to hear more about it and see lots more photos. April, I can't wait for you to be O-V-E-R over. I wonder if the Tums bottle is serious when it says not to eat more than 10 a day. You would think 10 is a lot, but it is only 10 a.m. and I'm well on my way to eating a whole bottle. | | Friday, April 8th, 2005 | | 10:22 am |
We have a home
We haven't signed the lease yet, but we've reserved a "huge" two bedroom apartment. I don't really know if it is huge as I have not seen it yet. I figure I'll see it when I sign the lease. We had to sign a 13 month lease (con) to get the move in special. Whatever, even with the extra $10/month we are renting a 2 bedroom which is twice the size as most of the one bedrooms in Arlington that are in our price range. And, we are paying less than what most places charge for a one bedroom. It looks safe, it isn't in the best shape, but I'm poor and I'll take what I can get. It is walkable to the metro and lots of bars. Ok, so now I have two weeks to pack. If you like to pack, come on over. If you have boxes, drop 'em off. I went to four stores yesterday in the rain to get boxes. No one had any. Well, I did score three after following the fruit guy around Giant and following a stock boy at Staples. Yay, a new apartment. Sadly, I really don't want to move :( | | Thursday, April 7th, 2005 | | 12:16 pm |
More apartment choices...
Well, we found a third apartment we are interested in today. It isn't as nice as the place we saw in Fairfax, or our current place. But, it is walkable to Courthouse Metro and it is in our price range. They also have a move-in special so we could even (just barely) afford a two bedroom. So, our new choices are, take a one bedroom and get rid of a lot of stuff, and maybe move in one year. or Take a two bedroom, not get rid of our stuff and have to move in one year because we won't be able to afford it. Decisions decisions. There are a lot of negatives about the apartment so we probably wouldn't want to stay for an additional year anyway. We can't control heat or air-conditioning (but we also don't pay utilities). The kitchen sucks, but we can walk to all my favorite restaurants....hmm. Either way we will be moving in two weeks. TWO WEEKS! We have given notice or started packing. And, finals are coming up. Wow, my skin is breaking out just at the thought of the added stress. | | Monday, April 4th, 2005 | | 2:56 pm |
movies
It is the waiting that sucks. I just want to make a decision and do it, but since we have to wait for an open apartment in Arlington, we have to wait. There is no way around it. This weekend I saw Sin City. This is the first non-animated (well, non-cartoon anyway) movie I have seen in the theaters in ages. I had to hide my eyes during some scenes, but the nightmares aren't as bad as I thought they would be. We also rented Finding Neverland and Vera Drake. I really liked Finding Neverland. I'm looking forward to seeing how Willy Wonka turned out. Vera Drake on the other hand, I couldn't watch. Seriously, I have no idea why, but I could not watch this film. It wasn't disturbing, so I don't know why it got to me. Regardless, I hid in the bedroom and finished the draft for a paper. At least I got some work done. | | 9:01 am |

As Peggy Hill would say, "oh yeah."
So excited. There is no penalty for breaking our lease! So, for all of those many LJ users and friends who gave me recommendations, I can finally start pursuing them. I'm so excited, I just can't hide it. I'm about to lose control... Choices to make: 1. Pay too much money to stay in the are we currently live in. 2. Pay a little less money to live farther away. 3. Pay a lot less money and give up easy access to metro. 4. Pay the same or more money for a bigger place where ever we can find one. 5. Pay more money and rent a townhouse/condo/SFH (or a rambler, b/c who doesn't want to live in a rambler). Glitches: 1. I won't be done with school for another year - I can go to either the Fairfax or Arlington Campus. 2. Joe will be leaving his job very soon for an unpaid internship and possibly a low paying part-time job. 3. We will be broke on just my salary. ...I'm still excited... ... Port Au Prince I wanna catch a glimpse
Aruba, Jamaica, ooo I wanna take you Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama Key Largo, Montego, baby why don't we go . . . A random turn of events has changed my summer plans. I was planning on heading out west this summer, but Joe's sister has free tickets anywhere (the airline screwed her over on her last trip) so she has invited us to go to Key Largo. Of course, we don't have free tickets but flights to Miami are pretty cheap anyway. So, it looks like we will be heading there in August, which may be the rainy season but according to the CVB's site, the rain shouldn't be too bad. The funny part is, the four of us who are going have the skin types that should not be left out in the sun. We are are very, very fair skinned. Maybe I'll buy a really big hat, and a giant umbrella. Maybe I can get someone to follow me around with one, maybe the guy who follows Michael Jackson around with an umbrella could offer some referrals. It gives me something to look forward to. Delightful. Current Mood: cheerful | | Friday, March 18th, 2005 | | 11:53 am |
I am done with the class from hell
I just sent in my final exam. I have very strange traits when it comes to dealing with tough classes or difficult inquiries at work. I work really hard up front, trying to figure out what in going on. I get to a point where I just decide it isn't worth it so I put something together, close my eyes and hand it in. I've done that with two assignments for this class. So glad it is over. Hopefully my class that starts tonight is better. This weekend I'm taking Saidy out for a long over due birthday lunch. Also, a certain crazy "sister-in-law" will be in town. I think she is kooky, Joe on the other hand thinks she is need of serious help. I hope they have a chance to talk, but knowing him, he won't address his concerns. We'll see. She will only be at our place for half a day (she is spending the rest of the week with a friend). It would have been nice for her to come on a weekend so we could hang out, but her church forbids her to do anything on Friday evenings and Saturdays. I thought maybe she could fly in on a Thursday then, but no, she is getting "baptized" in Ohio. Ok, I have nothing against baptism, but I really don't like this church yet so I'm skeptical. My cold is here to stay. This is the end of week seven. I wonder if it is allergies. The Tori Amos album is fantastic. I'm still bitter that I couldn't get tickets so I don't want to think about her just yet. Sadly, yesterday may have been the first Saint Patrick's Day in a long time that I didn't have a least one beer. | | Tuesday, March 8th, 2005 | | 9:02 am |
Hometown Woes
The strangest things have been going on in my hometown. When my parents were visiting they mentioned that so and so passed away, he had brain cancer. My heart stopped. I had no idea. I went to school with him and was Madly in love with him for six year and they knew it (no kidding, loved this guy). It happened ages ago and they just mention it, out of the blue. So, I asked, “are you sure.” And they think so. This was very sad. I haven’t been able to confirm it yet though, so there is still hope. Also, another guy I went to school with tried to stab his father to death last week. This happened around the corner from my parents’ house. He had been living in a “home” as my parents put it, which means a halfway house. Our town use to have one of the largest state psychiatric hospitals, but it closed a long time ago and literally everyone was let out to live in these “homes” the state bought around town. Now the town has two of the largest prisons in the state instead. This story was just as shocking as the first. Good news from home never ends, earlier this week, or over the weekend, a group of teenagers had a party and a fire started. Everyone got out, except one young man (19 years old) who burned to death. This also happened a few blocks from my parents’ place. This blows my mind. Our town is tiny. I just don’t see how the fire truck couldn’t get there in time. Also on the home front, my parents always bug my sister and I about, “why don’t we go to Germany.” Well, I can think of NO reason to go. Finally I said to them, if they go, I’ll go with them. That would really be my only reason. My whole family is from Germany and Luxembourg so it would be great to go with family and maybe try to meet up with relatives. My parents have never been outside of the US, except for several trips to Ontario. So, I figure this will never happen. Well, my mom got her passport. Her first ever passport. I’m so excited for them. I really hope they go, and I would seriously go with them. That may be on the horizon in the next year or so. Nothing else is going on in my life. I’m having the hardest time writing this paper for class and after working on it for four weeks it still sucks and I just want it to be over. So, because when I obsess about schoolwork, I really obsess, and therefore I haven’t worked out in a LONG LONG time. Last year I worked out like a pro when I didn’t have class so I’ve decided to take the summer off and get back into it. This will mean graduating in Spring of 06, instead of Winter 05. I don’t really care about that since I’m so sick of school now anyway. Also, I am super depressed because I could not get tickets to the Tori Amos show next month. I called and was online to order, but by a few minutes after noon on Saturday they only had single tickets and I didn't want to sit by myself. Now I wish I had because I really really love her. I pre-ordered the special edition CD as well, and still haven't received it. I think Tori is very angry with me. Current Mood: worried | | Tuesday, February 15th, 2005 | | 10:16 am |
Tax Man
I'm not so good at following directions. I had to file a 1040X last year to amend my 1040A. Now, I'm looking back on last year's taxes and I realize I made another mistake, this one gets me a larger refund. So, I need to file a 1040X on my other 1040X. I wasn't sure if or how I could do this, so I called the IRS. WOW - they are so nice. So, if you have tax questions call them. They were extremely helpful. They will even walk you through filling out the forms. Something tells me I'll be filing 1040Xs every year because I never do things right the first time. | | Monday, February 14th, 2005 | | 12:58 pm |
Happy Valentine's Day
I personally feel that Valentine's Day should be one of those holidays that is "observed" on the closest Friday or Saturday night. I hate Mondays (not as much as I hate Sundays) and it would not be fun to celebrate one's love on a Monday night. Especially when one's lover is in class and then has a meeting until 10 p.m. So, I began my tradition of observing silly holidays whenever I want to on Saturday, after spending seven hours in class. I had plans. They involved a recipe from Bon Appetite. I was going to cook. I even bought the wine during my lunch break. But, when I got home I was exhausted. I was practically asleep. However, I perked up a little with some soda and we rang in Valentine's Day (observed) with three bottles of wine and pizza. Thanks Pizza Boli and I'm so sorry I forgot to tip you. I suck at Valentine's Day gifts. I had ordered him a gift, but it never shipped out and so I finally canceled it. It is also back ordered in stores until whenever. So, I had no gift to give. Had I not drank so much wine I would have played him a song. "I have no gift to bring pa rum pum pum pum." I got flowers and shoes. He got an IOU. I started to come down with a cold Friday during class, and woke up very stuffy Sunday morning. But I think I kicked it with Tylenol Flu medicine. Unfortunately, I was still sick all day yesterday because I was cleaning the bath tub and shower curtain with bleach and used way too much. We couldn't breath. I had to open windows. We even slept with the window open. Hopefully the bleach cloud will clear up today. The parents are coming down this weekend. I suggested a German restaurant, which they acted excited about. But then my mom made a little comment like, "Do you even like German food." And honestly, no. Not really. I took her hint that she wouldn't like it so I canceled those plans. Hopefully we will not fight all weekend. Odds are against me. Also, I'm suppose to be done with my grad program in December 2005, but none of the classes I need are being offered in Arlington or Fairfax this summer so I won't be able to finish until May 2006. This puts be an entire year behind as opposed to one semester. I'm kind of upset because I don't know where we will be moving to in the Fall and I can't imagine it would be more convenient to campus, but I'm sure it will work out. Maybe we'll move to Fairfax. Geography Lessons
I couldn't sleep at all last night. This has been going on for a few weeks now. Two nights ago I took Sominex and it didn't help. Anyway, I eventually fell asleep around 2 a.m. or so. In one of my dreams last night I was visiting relatives in Ohio. We were driving by the "river" that really looked like an ocean. While looking at the water I noticed several people swimming and hippos. Yup, hippos. So, I asked by uncle, why are there hippos in the "river." "Well, duh," he tells me. "The 'Ohio River' feeds into the Nile and many hippos come up this way during the season," he says. "Of, course, of course. I had no idea," I say. The hippos began chasing after some of the swimmers at this point. So, I'm at work and really behind. But, the system I need to access in order to catch up on work is (and has been for weeks) really screwed up so I can't access any of the messages that I need to respond to, and I have at least 20. They are all due today, one is over due, and now they will all be very late if I can't get into them today. Also, my train was delayed this morning putting me at work 20 minutes late. This is the third time in 7 or 8 business days, the other two times I had to off load. My weekend will only get better. Tonight, I am jonesing for a fish fry but don't know where to go. I'll probably stay in and work on my drug testing and supreme court paper. Fun times! Current Mood: bad karmaCurrent Music: HVAC |
